In this video, Ash takes us through the simple steps to get your pond looking its best and functioning properly as we move from spring into summer. Whether you're dealing with algae, murky water, or just unsure where to start, this beginner-friendly guide has you covered.
1. Restart and Clean the Filter
Many people switch off their pond filters over winter, but now’s the time to get them back up and running.
-
Clean the sponges and pads inside your filter.
-
Make sure the UV bulb is working—Ash recommends changing it annually for best results.
UV bulbs help kill the microscopic algae that causes green water—replacing them is cheap and effective.
2. Test the Water Quality
Spring is the perfect time to check your water parameters, including:
-
pH
-
KH and GH (carbonate and general hardness)
-
Nitrites and nitrates
Ash uses Envii Pond Test Strips, which check all five in seconds. After dipping and drying the strip, you'll get a quick snapshot of your pond's health.
If the pH is too low (like Ash’s at around 6.6), you may need a product like Pond Equaliser to bring it back into balance.
3. Light Feeding Only
As the weather warms up, start feeding your fish lightly—don’t overdo it.
-
Uneaten food sinks and becomes sludge, which feeds algae.
-
As summer progresses, you can return to a normal feeding routine.
4. Add Beneficial Bacteria
This step is key. Ash uses Pond Klear, a 100% natural bacterial treatment that:
-
Targets nutrients algae feed on
-
Clears green water
-
Prevents algae growth if used weekly
Add the right amount for your pond’s size (e.g. 100ml for 4,000L) and pour it evenly around the pond.
Final Tips
-
Do these steps early in the season before algae and issues really take hold.
-
Weekly maintenance with beneficial bacteria keeps the pond crystal clear.
