How To Protect Your Waxy Hostas From Slugs & Snails

10th March

Hosta are some of the best plants anyone could have in their garden. They’re easy to grow, require low maintenance and often outlive other plants to provide a lush green display! It’s no wonder Hosta are so popular among gardeners. Unfortunately, the nation’s favourite garden plant is also very popular among slugs and snails.

There are few things tastier to a gastropod than a big, juicy Hosta. Slugs and snails will feast away at the leaves until there’s nothing left but holes which ruin the aesthetic of your garden. So, if you decide to grow Hosta in your garden, it’s important to know the best way to protect them. Especially if you live in areas with dull, damp weather and plenty of rainfall – like England.

Luckily, the answer to solving the slug problem is to simply get rid of the slugs.

However, traditional chemical slug killers and deterrents such as metaldehyde slug pellets are out of question. Studies have shown they pose a threat to the environment, wildlife and essentially won’t do your garden any favours in the long run.

Some gardeners swear by wandering into their garden in the evening on a slug hunt mission. Armed with a torch and their hands (or some other tool) to pick slugs away from plants one by one. But most won’t really have time to do this every night.

The good news is are other effective methods which requires minimal effort…

Natural and Organic Slug Prevention Alternatives

Natural and organic alternatives are the best approach when it comes to protecting Hostas (or any plants) from slugs and snails. At envii, we have two unique and highly effective slug control methods that not only protect them from gastropods but will feed and nourish your plants as well!

Envii Feed & Protect

Envii Feed & Protect is a plant food AND slug and snail deterrent. Its first job is to provide essential micro-nutrients to the plant which allows it to grow to its full potential. What makes Feed & Protect so special is that it makes the leaves taste bitter to gastropods.

Rather than filling your garden with ugly blue pellets that could endanger other wildlife, you can deter slugs and snails in a non-hazardous way. Slugs no longer enjoy the taste of your Hostas and will leave them alone. Slugs are not harmed or irritated from the treatment, just simply steered away.

Feed & Protect comes in a powder form that you dilute in water. Due to the fact that Hostas have very waxy leaves, you can add a small squirt of washing up liquid into the solution. This helps the plant’s leaves absorb the solution and make sure it is fully effective.

As an invisible form of protection, we recommend Feed & Protect for domestic garden displays and flower gardens, but it’s perfectly suitable for vegetable gardens too.

Stopping Slugs & Snails for Good

All gardeners know that slugs and snails will never stop in their mission. That’s why having an good approach to stopping them is so important. While both envii products are highly effective alone, gardens that suffer with extreme slug pest problems can use both treatments together to stop the relentless gastropods for good.
